Group Editor

Editorial Augusta GA

Job Description

The Group Editor (GE) serves as one of the captains of the Morris Visitor Publications editorial team, providing a guiding hand in directing the content of products within the group’s markets. The GE manages the productivity of a staff of assistant editors, interns and freelancers, offers a sense of connectedness within the group and assures brand continuity by offering guidance to editors in the group to keep them “on brand.” This position is based in our headquarters office in Augusta, Georgia.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of excellent writing/copyediting experience and strong editorial judgment
  • 1-2 years experience supervising assistant editors
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or related field
  • Strongly self-motivated and needing minimal supervision
  • Highly computer literate, including hands-on experience with InDesign/InCopy, Adobe, Drupal and other content management systems
  • Experience with magazine and print product processes from concept to print date
  • Experience in digital publishing
  • Passion for both traditional and new digital publishing processes and social media
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that group editorial staff stays on deadline for all publications within its region
  • Act as initial and final set of eyes for all products within the group
  • Research and hire freelance writers and maintain writer database for group
  • Keep an up-to-date log of the group’s budget
  • Participate in a weekly meeting with all editorial staff to discuss an editorial plan for the week, concerns within the department, production issues, etc.
  • Offer constructive feedback after each issue or publication goes to press. Comment on cover and feature selection and execution, discuss challenges and offer recommendations.
  • Keep a continual eye on Living Proof for the group’s content, pre- and post-production for all the group’s products
  • Look to the company’s Learning Center for knowledge-based opportunities
  • Be responsible for the timely dissemination of all digital newsletters within the group
  • Create storyboards for the group’s Where magazines, GuestBooks and special projects and conduct storyboard/planning meetings for these issues
  • Generate a style sheet for each market within the group
  • Coordinate with managing editor for additional assistance when needed
  • Be in constant communication with art directors, photo editor and production staff at every stage of production, from concept to publication
  • Participate in content strategy meetings that will focus on generating new story ideas for digital content for all markets within the group and for the website as a whole
  • Assist in monitoring and encouraging on-schedule delivery of digital content
  • Provide any requested assistance to train writers on digital content creation and publishing
  • Advocate for editorial integrity while keeping in mind sales concerns such as sold covers, advertiser indexes, etc.

 The role of Art Director is responsible for producing all elements and components of product design with practical creativity. Must be able to collaborate with editorial staff in creating feature layouts. Demonstrates the ability to design autonomously as well as function as part of team in order to produce high quality products. Skill set must include sophisticated sense of typography, photo editing skills, page design and ability to tell a story through words and pictures. Manages workflow as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be very experienced with the Adobe CS, multiple versions.
  • At least a four-year degree in design, art, journalism, related field or life experience.
  • At least 4 years of consumer/trade/custom magazine or similar experience.
  • Solid working knowledge of publishing workflows and pre-press processes.
  • Sophisticated sensibility in application of imagery and process color to editorial page.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of design trends.

STATEMENT OF THE JOB:

The role of Publishing Services Coordinator is to assist in managing the workflow and processes that results in print publications that are complete, correct and on time. Skills related to this goal include creating paginations, monitoring advertising materials and following standard workflow processes. The ability to work with an internal team of Art Directors and Graphic Designers and well as remote staff and vendors is critical to success. The ability to provide production support for overflow work is desired.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years publishing experience (magazine preferred) which includes product layout and pagination, communicating with external and internal customers, working with advertising and production systems and an understanding of pre-flight systems.
  • Working knowledge of the print/manufacturing process and systems from pre-press and layout through final product delivery.
  • Adobe CS experience (multiple versions helpful) in order to build products.
  • Proactively identify risks in order to avoid errors and minimize potential workflow issues. Ability to apply good judgment in order to help reach effective, timely solutions while working within the boundaries of existing personnel and schedules.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; must be able to understand and utilize tact and persuasiveness while interacting with internal as well as external customers.
