STATEMENT OF THE JOB:

 The role of Art Director is responsible for producing all elements and components of product design with practical creativity. Must be able to collaborate with editorial staff in creating feature layouts. Demonstrates the ability to design autonomously as well as function as part of team in order to produce high quality products. Skill set must include sophisticated sense of typography, photo editing skills, page design and ability to tell a story through words and pictures. Manages workflow as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be very experienced with the Adobe CS, multiple versions.
  • At least a four-year degree in design, art, journalism, related field or life experience.
  • At least 4 years of consumer/trade/custom magazine or similar experience.
  • Solid working knowledge of publishing workflows and pre-press processes.
  • Sophisticated sensibility in application of imagery and process color to editorial page.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of design trends.
  • Highly organized, proactive, detail oriented with ability to work in a fast paced environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with Publishing Services leadership and design staff to conceptualize, design and produce all elements of MVP products including but not exclusive to maps, Where Magazine, Quick Guides and Guestbooks.
  • Participate in book building process from concept through printed product.
  • Responsible and accountable for correctness and completeness of final products while adhering to schedules and deadlines.
  • Recommend methods to streamline and improve production/design processes.
  • Facilitate the success of the team by being actively leader in problem solving and quality improvement.
  • Be familiar with primary responsibilities of other team members and assist them when necessary.
  • Monitor and stay current with all products produced by the team.
  • Stay current on new software and technological advancements.

Primarily seated at a desk using a computer in an air-conditioned office.

Must be able to work in a drug-free, smoke-free environment. Occasional night or weekend work.

STATEMENT OF THE JOB:  The objective of this position is to plan, organize and execute graphic design functions for Savannah Magazine’s portfolio of print and digital products, coordinate creative responsibilities of the magazine and its products in concert with the editorial, sales and design teams, and work collaboratively with the management team to support the business objectives of the organization.

THE REQUIREMENTS OR SPECIFICATIONS: Must be highly creative, organized, professional, flexible, enthusiastic and collaborative; proficient on Macintosh with expert knowledge of publishing software; have excellent communication skills and an understanding of editing and proofreading workflows; must be detail-oriented and able to work well with others and under immense deadline pressure; able to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once; and strong grammar, spelling and style usage are a plus.

EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:  5 years design experience.  Magazine experience preferred.  Must possess strong working knowledge and experience with Adobe Creative Suite and other pertinent publishing and graphic design programs.  Must have working knowledge of commercial-printing and web-publishing processes. Supervisory experience a plus. 

EDUCATION:  Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

  • Serve as the art director for the flagship city magazine Savannah Magazine as well as Savannah Weddings, Savannah HOMES and other ancillary and niche publications produced by the staff.  This includes collaborating with the editorial and marketing to establish the overall look and visual brand of the publications and marketing materials as well as interpret ideas into graphic design concepts, develop templates and execute high-quality, polished layouts.
  • Work collaboratively with the management team to lead in the development of strategic planning, branding initiatives and product expansion to support the business objectives of the organization.
  • Work cohesively with the management team to support the vision for the Savannah Magazine brand, remembering who its readers are and creating graphic content and covers with the city magazine’s audience and demographic in mind.
  • Uphold the mission, brand, tone and voice of Savannah Magazine in its portfolio of products and marketing materials, both print and digital.
  • Collaborate with the Editor on annual editorial calendar working in concert with the management team and staff.  Coordinate with the editorial/design teams to further develop the themes outlined in the editorial calendar and create graphic content and covers for each issue within budgetary guidelines. 
  • Manage the graphic design team.  This includes hiring, training, motivating and guiding graphic designers to create print and digital content and/or ads to engage the portfolio’s readership, showcase the community, and achieve audience development (for content) and client (for ads) goals.
  • Work with the editorial team to plan and schedule photography.
  • Recruit, develop and maintain a strong pool of freelance photographers and stylists for editorial and sales needs.
  • Oversee photography expense budget and process all appropriate paperwork associated with expenses.
  • Assist in creating an annual production schedule and responsible for meeting key deadlines.  Communicate deadline statuses with management team, including overseeing graphic designer/s responsible for communication ad production status.
  • Create the flat plan for each publication, in collaboration with the sales and editorial teams, and manage the tableproofing and uploading processes for each publication.
  • Coordinate design of magazine’s marketing and promotional materials.
  • Provide advertising sales support by coordinating creation of sales materials, spec ads and efficient file-sharing methods.
  • Work with printers and art departments to ensure timely upload and quality of publications.
  • Provide excellent customer service and communication to readers/subscribers, business partners, advertisers and anyone interested in the magazine. Every interaction is an opportunity to build relationships.
  • Represent the magazine and its products in the community outside traditional office hours, while building and supporting strategic partnerships.
