Job Description: The Photo Editor (PE) works closely with the editorial and design teams to identify photography needs across our print and digital platforms, including our Where® and Where® GuestBook publications. In addition to sourcing photography, the PE is responsible for the overall quality of our publications from a photographic standpoint. The PE creates and manages the photo database for approximately 30 markets across the U.S., monitors the photo budget and negotiates contracts with photo agencies and freelance photographers. This position is based in our headquarters office in Augusta, Georgia.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 3+ years experience editing photography for print and digital publications
  • Bachelor’s or associate’s degree in photography or related discipline preferred
  • Creative and conceptual thinker with a sophisticated eye and strong visual point of view
  • Knowledge of all areas of photography including lifestyle, conceptual, portrait, still life, travel
  • Highly computer literate, including hands-on experience in Adobe Bridge, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Photo Mechanic, Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Drupal and other content management systems
  • Experience in video production a plus
  • Experience negotiating contracts with photo agencies

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Consult with market editors and art directors on photography needs for each publication
  • Be in constant communication with editors, art directors, and production staff at every stage of production, from concept to publication
  • With help of assistant photo editor, source photography for each print publication and for online content and ensure adherence to deadlines
  • Ensure that photos selected are current and accurately depict the subject/contents
  • Research and hire freelance photographers as needed and ensure adherence to deadlines
  • Create guidelines for photography submissions
  • Participate in content strategy meetings, weekly staff meetings and other meetings as needed
  • Create and monitor photo budget
  • Create and manage photo database
  • Retouch images as needed
  • Organize and/or attend photo shoots as needed
  • Travel to markets to shoot as needed
  • Supervise assistant photo editor(s)
  • Ensure accuracy of photo credits and captions
  • Ensure photo usage does not violate any copyright laws
